Bot Filtering in Performance Now!

Some traffic sources (especially ads) send a mix of humans and bots. Performance Now! lets you control how strict the bot filter is for each optimizer.

The setting go from 0 to 8, where:

• Level 0 blocks all bots very strictly, with a high chance of blocking real users.
• Level 8 is the most lenient, allowing most traffic through, including many bots, with the exception of the bots that willingly self-identify as bots.

We recommend using levels 3–5 for real-world use, as they balance bot filtering with adequate user experience.

Dynamic Complexity

The bot filtering level works by making the browser perform a simple JavaScript calculation.

This means that the complexity of the bot filtering is dynamic and can adapt to different traffic sources. This allows Performance Now! to effectively filter out bots while avoiding annoying real users with usual captchas.

The calculation becomes more complex as the detected bot level increases, making it harder for bots to bypass the filter.
